“An ugly 70’s duckling becomes an investor’s modern day swan”

Summary

Once upon a time, an investment group of time-poor friends bought a dark brown brick box of a house that stunk to high-heaven, had decades worth of grime and grease on every surface, and was made up of a series of small dark rooms that hadn’t seen sunshine in many years. We waved our magic wand on an exceptionally tight budget, and transformed this ugly duckling into a light, bright home that oozes sunshine and Scandi style.

Opportunities

The horrible face brick and overgrown gardens of the exterior and the small, dark rooms inside were like a beacon for us. We were given a mandate to make it feel bigger than it was and lighter. We didn’t need a second invitation to weave our magic here. The central wall separating the dark, cramped Lounge and the eat-in Kitchen was removed, opening up the space to become one large living area. The old mission brown bay window was removed in favour of a set of gorgeous French doors leading to a refurbished and pretty front garden. Voila – the sunshine poured in!

Complexities

The main challenges were working with a low-pitched tile roof typical of the era, poor insulation, enormous trees and overgrown gardens, and our clients’ tight investment budget. We achieved a lovely renovation ahead of schedule, and with a little money left over for our clients to invest in some interior decoration.
