“Creating space out of nothing at all”

Summary

Referred to us by a former client, this couple treasured their early 1900’s 1 bedroom terrace home, but at a mere 4.7m wide, and with a tiny but beautifully formed backyard, we knew creating the desired large, sunny and contemporary Kitchen, Laundry, Study and Dining space, alongside a gorgeous, tile-free Bathroom would be quite a challenge, but one we were eager to take on. Neither budget or block-size would allow for an extension, so we re-think of the existing layout was in order.

Opportunities

A previous extension to the rear provided the bones from which we could re-work the space to provide for a chic, contemporary open plan Kitchen and Dining space, with a separate Study nook and a fantastic Bathroom with quality fixtures. A mobile workbench can be shifted to one side when not in use to make for a larger Dining area when entertaining. The high-gloss black cabinetry and stainless steel of the Kitchen reflects light and tricks the eye into believing the space is bigger than it is. Concealed in the cabinetry is a Euro-style Laundry and even includes added storage for the vacuum cleaner. One of the best features is the gorgeous honed and sealed concrete floor together with a line of bricks in the Kitchen where one of the walls was removed to add another point of interest!

Complexities

This is by far the narrowest house we’ve worked on, so access was a challenge. Our lovely clients chose to move into our Victoria Park property we make available for client accommodation, so we had complete access, but the lack of parking for trades and our skip bin was something we needed to overcome.
